Amanda Buchan

Amanda Buchan lived in Africa, the Middle East and the South Pacific before joining the British Council to work in Technical Assistance and in the Library, Information and Books Division. She was Assistant Director of the British Book Development Council until 1990, when she co-founded the leading international consultancy company, International Book Development. She has conducted many education consultancies in countries in Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, the Middle East, Asia and South America. She is a fluent French speaker. She has a particular interest in the encouragement of early reading and the development and use of school and classroom libraries. She has worked in most aspects of learning and teaching materials development including evaluation, procurement and distribution. She was involved for many years in Armenia in the development of the highly successful textbook revolving funds and rental scheme.

More recently she has worked on learning materials reform projects in Jordan, Oman, Uzbekistan and in Rwanda, where she is currently involved in a national reform project to include schools in the the selection and procurement of a new generation of learning materials. In Central Asia and former Soviet Union countries, she in involved in planning new approaches to the development of school libraries to support the new student-centred learning curricula. She is also an experienced researcher and has contributed to several studies and research reports.
